Bush's golf gulf

by Sam Roggeveen - 15 May 2008 12:04PM

President Bush is getting some blogospheric grief for his statement that he chose to give up golf because:

I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the Commander-in-Chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be as -- to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.

It's easy to get sarcastic about this (I assume Jon Stewart will not resist the temptation), but it's not as if Bush is claiming it as a great sacrifice. After all, he gave up golf in 2003 and has said nothing about it since. And he isn't shouting about it from the rooftops now — he just answered a direct question.
