Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun columnist and fellow clog wog (at least, that's what they used to call me at school),
accuses me of
pessimism when it comes to Holland's chances at Euro 2008. I think of it more as sensible psychological preparation for the likely disappointment ahead. In fact, maybe my broadly conservative outlook on international affairs is conditioned by being a Dutch football fan. I know the Dutch have the most
beautiful,
talented and
artistic players and the
most innovative footballing system, but such virtues are seldom rewarded in a cruel and unromantic world that is far more concerned with
power.
