Holland, the beautiful losers

by Sam Roggeveen - 18 June 2008 2:22PM

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun columnist and fellow clog wog (at least, that's what they used to call me at school), accuses me of pessimism when it comes to Holland's chances at Euro 2008. I think of it more as sensible psychological preparation for the likely disappointment ahead. In fact, maybe my broadly conservative outlook on international affairs is conditioned by being a Dutch football fan. I know the Dutch have the most beautiful, talented and artistic players and the most innovative footballing system, but such virtues are seldom rewarded in a cruel and unromantic world that is far more concerned with power.
