Small wars: Beyond the field manual

by Sam Roggeveen - 15 October 2008 10:59AM

I'm happy to be corrected by Mark on the proportion of Field Manuals the US military has produced on 'small wars'. I'm also prepared to revise my view that the 'small war' school is in the ascendency in the US. But we can't base that debate on a numeric comparison of Field Manuals alone. One critical factor to be considered is US military leadership, and on that score, General Petraeus and Secretary Gates can surely count as strong advocates for the 'small war' worldview.
