  • I'm told that at ANU's Burma Update Conference earlier this week, rumours were flying that East Timor plans to be the first country to accord full diplomatic recognition to Burma's 'government in exile', the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma. Those who would dismiss the idea as fanciful may find Jose Ramos-Horta's latest comments on the situation in Burma interesting.
  • Norway trashes UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
  • Passport has links to a blog debate about whether, in the event of a coalition withdrawal, Afghanistan would once again become an al Qaeda safe haven.
  • The NY Times has a scoop on the CIA's use of Blackwater to hunt down al Qaeda members. • First clear photos of Russia's new ballistic missile submarine. (H/t Russian Navy blog.)
  • The WSJ on India's vast aid program to Afghanistan.
  • The Dutch Army wants more Australian Bushmaster vehicles for Afghanistan operations, because their existing ones have suffered so many attacks.

Interpreting the Aid Review

This is the archive of a Lowy Institute blog which ran from January to April of 2011. It was published to debate the Gillard Government's independent aid review, which was then in its research and consultation phase. We offer this archive as a service to researchers and the general public.
