Want to work at the Lowy Institute? Part-time assistant online editor needed

With The Interpreter's Assistant Editor, Andrew Carr, leaving us soon to pursue an academic career, the Lowy Institute is looking for a new part-time assistant online editor. The position will help build the Lowy Institute's online presence, supporting The Interpreter, our social media presence and our website.

Below is a description of the position and the skills you will need. If you're interested in applying, please send a CV and covering letter to blogeditor@lowyinstitute.org . Applications close at COB on 1 February. The duties of the position, in rough order of importance:

  • Sub-editing of submissions made to The Interpreter.
    • Including headline-writing, photo selection and editing, as well as general maintenance (non-technical) of the site.
  • Helping to build the Lowy Institute's social media presence.
    • Including maintenance of the Lowy Institute's Twitter and Facebook pages.
  • Producing occasional blog posts and website content.
    • Including aggregation (eg. 'Linkage' blog posts), summarising Lowy Institute events and publications for the website and producing audio and video clips.
  • Building/maintaining relations with outside bloggers and web editors to promote and syndicate Lowy Institute work.

Applicants need excellent written communications skills with experience in sub-editing, online publishing and website management experience, strong social media skills, experience in the use of multimedia production software, and preferably a familiarity with foreign policy and international relations.

It is preferred though not essential that applicants reside near the Lowy Institute (Sydney), but they must be Australia-based. The role could be performed remotely if the applicant has access to reliable high-speed internet and (home) office facilities and is willing to travel for occasional meetings. The position is for 16 hours per week, but applicants must be able to work 32-hour weeks occasionally to cover absences.
