Reader ripostes: Demystifying Darwin

by Reader riposte - 17 July 2012 1:25PM

From our Facebook page, some interesting responses to Linda Jakobson's proposal to 'demystify' the Darwin US Marines basing decision by turning the northern city into a hub for diplomatic meetings and humanitarian joint exercises. A selection, starting with Adrian Vandermay:

A greater integration with China on all levels is needed. Perhaps an old school Great White Fleet style invitation should be sent to the growing Chinese navy to visit Australian Naval ports on both coasts. It would also make for a good China PR campaign.

David Howell:

As long as it is for diplomatic missions and confidence-building, such bold and innovative ideas could be just what Australia's trilateral balancing act needs.

 JW Frogen:

China is not a power like the US, the later with a pluralistic and culturally inclusive idealism. This does not exist in Chinese culture. There is a reason despite China's growing economic power almost every nation in the region seeks growing military ties with the US, including former foes like Vietnam. China is not premised on cultural inclusion. It is not in her culture.

She will look after her interests and all policy will be directed to that end. Best to talk to her with nice pleasantries, sell our expensive rocks to her and have a very powerful, pluralistic American friend in Darwin.
